What Is Sodium Laurel Sulfate?

Let's get down to brass tax. What should you know about sodium laurel sulfate?

Sodium Laureth Sulfate, SLS for short or also seen as sodium lauryl sulfate, is something you can find in the ingredients list of many cleaning products in your house if you look for it. You can find it in your soap, shampoo, toothpaste, laundry detergent, and more. But what is it? Sodium laureth sulfate is a synthetic detergent used in many cleaning products due to it's highly foaming nature. The challenge is knowing if you want clean or the feeling of clean from foam. When I switched from using my regular SLS free toothpaste to one with sodium laureth sulfate, especially when I wasn't used to it, I felt like I was foaming at the mouth - it was crazy!

What does this have to do with Birch+Brass?

Because Birch+Brass soaps are natural soaps, sodium laureth sulfate is one thing you won't find in our ingredients list.

As defined by The CDC's website SLS is "...toxic to aquatic organisms. It is strongly advised that this substance does not enter the environment." Some people also have sensitivities to sodium lauryl sulfate, especially on the skin or around the eyes or for those who have more sensitive skin. Being more informed about the products you're purchasing gives you the power to know what is being absorbed into your body. Birch+Brass is an actual soap, not a detergent, because of the natural cold process soap creation method. When following this method, there is no sodium lauryl sulfate.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is a synthetic compound that helps create additional later, aka bubbles.

Knowing more about the ingredients you want in products you use can also make you feel better about supporting handmade artisans who take time to follow a natural process.

Each bar of soap from Birch+Brass is more than just soap. It's a blend of specific organic oils balanced to nourish and cleanse your skin. Whether it's adding skin nourishing organic shea butter or vitamin enriched organic olive oil or organic hemp seed oil, everything is hand selected for the perfect combination.
